New babies - a new experience

Well, yesterday was the 2 week old birthday of my new little fosters.
A month ago, I took in a very pregnant, beautiful calico cat (now named Habibi) that a lovely and caring woman had found hiding in her shed. She was looking for a safe place to make a nest for her impending kittens.
The first night in her room separate from my other cats, she hid underneath an armoire, nervous about the environment and all the new smells. despite her nervousness, she was easily coaxed out with a kind word, as she couldn't resist the promise of affection and a petting.
Although I had never had the experience of caring for a pregnant cat or new-born kittens, I was very excited and had to anxiously wait 2 whole weeks before they were born. I'm happy that she waited a little while as it gave me time to stuff her full of good food and comfort, hopefully to make her more healthy and prepared for the little babies.
The day of the birth I did research during my break at work, watching videos of cats giving birth (yikes!) and reading about what to do in case I needed to help. As it turns out, this was totally unnecessary. I came home and opened the door and immediately knew something was up, as Habibi didn't run to great me as she always does. Instead of the nice little towel and blanket-filled box I made for her, she decided to give birth in the bottom little house of the scratching post!
I was lucky, there were only 4 kittens, and enough milk for all.
I was surprised by their size and strength. I honestly expected them to be small, weak, and not-that-cute. Not true! They had strong squeaky voices and would even fight over a feeding spot.
It is absolutely fascinating to watch them grow. They change a little bit everyday.
They recognize my voice now and cry and try to climb out of their box when they hear me.
I'm smitten!

A Welcome Update..

As some of you may know ... I recently fostered a pregnant momma cat followed by the adorable kittens that came just a short time after. This was one of the most trying yet rewarding experiences I have ever had. Not only did I learn a lot about weening kittens and their health and survival needs but I learned about 'training' them as well. I learned about how beneficial it is for them to have regular human contact and how much they enjoyed play times and cuddle times. Long story short, as a foster mom you always wonder how it turned out in the end. How did things go AFTER they got adopted and went to their new home ? This is why I try and build a positive and open relationship with the new families that adopt the foster cats staying at my home. I encourage them to stay in touch with Scat Street Cat Rescue so they can send us questions, concerns or just a general update on how everyone is doing and adjusting.

I LOVE getting updates! I thought I would share one with you that made me a little misty eyed after raising the little ones ... I must have done something right haha. This is the BRAG book right? :) ) ....

"Hey Kristine! I thought you might be interested in how our little kitten FKA October is doing. In a word-purrfect! Bella is the sweetest, most energetic, loving, cuddly kitten we have ever been blessed by. When we brought her to her home on February 16th I was surprised at how quickly she became comfortable with the surroundings. She went to great lengths to explore and sniff out every corner and crawl space of our home. She has a favorite toy which she politely but repetitively asks to play with (her fish feathers) especially after waking up from a cat nap and having a drink. She has adopted all of us as her family and follows my 6 year old son around the house. I often find her sleeping with him at night on his bed when I come home from work! But she doesn't want my husband or myself to feel unappreciated, so during the evening she will curl up with me on the chair for 10 minutes then go to my husband on his chair for awhile and back and forth. She has the loudest purr considering she was so small when we got her. But my has she grown! She has taken to keeping me company when I have bubble baths and she jumps up and runs down the hallway when she hears the phone ring. A similar reaction is displayed by my son who jumps up and runs to answer the phone! We are so grateful your ministry that raised our Bella for her first four months. We are so thankful to have her in our lives and she has and will continue to give us endless joy and delight. Thank you again, and we'll keep you updated. I thought I'd include a picture or two! Life Long Friends... or Lunch ?

Who ever said Cats and Dogs are arch-enemies has certainly never stepped foot in my home. My zoo of rotating animals and visitors has created an interesting but safe meeting place for cats and dogs alike. From my 120lb St. Bernard to my boyfriends Chihuahua/Pomeranian X to my parents 80lb Labrador retriever that stops by from time to time, the cats at my place have learned to love ... or at least tolerate the inquisitive canines!

Emily, my St. Bernard is simply thrilled when a new cat or kitten comes to visit. She will whine at my feet until I let her meet nose to nose with the newcomer and she often smothers the kitten with slobbery licks when I give the "ok". The cats get used to it :) Maybe she is just tasting them for later?

Scrabble, the Chihuahua x is simply beside himself with excitement that something his size is there to play with! He tries his hardest to get close and to play with the new ones and wants to play a game of Cat and Mouse... or well I guess Cat and Dog every so badly. Maybe he prefers his meat lean ?

Sophie, the lab. What can I say about this people pleaser. She fearlessly heads straight to the cat, nose to nose, hoping to have a new friend. Desperately wanting to play by nudging softly and nibbling so gently. If the cat is uninterested she simply slumps down on the floor, head between her paws looking so sad and she watches patiently for another opportunity to reintroduce herself. Maybe she is just disappointed she missed her opportunity for a snack?

Jokes aside, I like to think that my place is a great place for cats to get used to having a dog in the house. Many homes these days are inhabited multi species lovers like myself and if I can help a cat learn to get along with the dogs in the house the better chance they have to get adopted. Its very important that adopted pets get along with everyone in the home and it makes for a happier stress-free environment for everyone :)

Quick Heating Pad

One of Donna's home mades for her teeny tinies is a quick heating pad.

Take an 11" sq piece of fabric, sew all around with a 1/2" seam, leaving an opening to turn inside out, fill with 1.4 kg split peas, handstitch the opening and there you go! Ready to pop into the microwave for a nice cozy for the furry kids.

Kittens - How time Flies!

Well the little ones are now four weeks old! Time is flying now! I cant believe they will be ready to go to their new home in just a few more weeks! That is if I can pry them from my boyfriends fingers, he wants to keep them! haha I guess his first time fostering makes it hard to let them go. I will admit after spending so much time with them and watching them grow up through the ups and downs makes it very hard too.

We have fallen in love with these little ones :) They are no longer staying in their bed, they come running when we come in the room and purr just slightly at our touch. Their teeth are coming in, their eyes are all open and always alert! They have begun to play with each-other and just starting to learn to lap up formula. I am so looking forward to the next few weeks with them.

My apologies for the delayed update on these sweethearts. Its been a rough few weeks. It hasn't been easy for this young family that for sure. We have had many struggles and losses along the way sadly. We have gone from troubles during a 12 hour labor for momma cat, to sickness and the loss of three kittens, then to hourly feedings by hand all through the day and night, antibiotics and fluid injections and now to assisting with their bowel movements on a regular basis ... too much info with that last part? ;)

Through it all, these three little fighters have fought hard to be here today. They are 2.5 weeks old now and looking happier and healthier every day. Their eyes are open, they are gaining weight steadily, they are eating on their own with just a little help from me now and then and they are becoming more and more active and curious. Here are some of my favorite pics...

I will keep the photos coming and if my calculations are right these guys will be ready to go just before Christmas :)

Lucky's foster mom

Here are photos from the other day when Lucky was picked up from the WDVM Small Animal Clinic. Ruth, his foster mom, listens closely to the vet's after care instructions. All part of a foster home's responsibilities to ensure that medical instructions are followed and that followup appointments are made and kept for the best possible care for the cat.

Lucky is now in his forever home and we look forward to seeing updated photos of him. This is a note from his new guardian:

good morning linda.just to touch base with you as i don't have a phone number.

picked up lucky last night after work.he is looking better everyday.his meds are almost done and will continue to steam him a bit in hopes it helps him a bit.ruth was an absolute great foster parent.she seems so experienced at fostering that i was shocked it was her first one.you have a great foster on your hands with her.

will still have to work with him on his eating.hope he figures it out soon that he doesn't have to eat it all that it will still be there later.he is very affectionate and purrs right away.

once he is settled better i will take some pictures and do a story up for you if you would like.i live in martensville but feel free to come out and see him if you need to make sure he is in a good home and recovering.also i actually need to know when he should go for his rabies shots.ruth mentioned that with his stitches out,microchipping and then deworming that it was enough proding so he didn't get the vaccination yet.if he can go anytime let me know and i can book him in with dr ward out here.

1. The first time you hear a newborn purr loud enough you can hear them from 2 feet away. Kitten purrs are priceless :)

2. Kitten fights! They can't see, hear, or climb over the side of the basket but the sibling rivalry has already begun! Its a full out screaming and scratching match ! These little guys will stop at nothing for the best spot on mom!

Stay tuned for names and sexes. I believe I have 4 males and one female but I'm no expert. Once the names are approved I will introduce them all to you :)

Todays blog post was supposed to be full of cute photos and happy stories but after coming home form work today I have sad news. I lost one of the kittens. :(

I checked on the kittens before work, at lunch and all was well. Even weighed them all last night so I could put them in they post for yesterday... maybe it was a sign that I didn't get time to do a posting on Day 2... because on day three I came home after work at approx 4:15 and one of the orange kittens was out of the little bed and was cool to the touch. Momma cat may have moved him from the bed for some reason. He was barely breathing and had the faintest meow. I grabbed the hot water bottle from the bed and refilled it and wrapped the little guy in a blanket and held him close gently petting him. I called the vet, Donna (our resident teenie tiny kitten caregiver), and our resident vet tech, Star, and they all gave the same advice warm him up and hopefully he starts to respond. Sadly ... while holding him just 60 minutes after I found him he stopped breathing while the phone rang to the 3rd call. I was in tears before Star picked up the phone and she got to listen to my bumbling. I held him a while longer just in case he fought back but no such luck. Poor little one didn't make it. Sorry for the sad news.

So everyone says the same thing "you did what you could", "there wasn't anything else you could do", "it happens" etc but I still feel sad and wish I could have done more. I guess its my first and I cant blame myself for being at work but its easy to do. Maybe if I came home earlier? Did a miss a sign? Should I have done more? etc etc but in the end I know I did everything I could and was watching them like a hawk daily so I just have to keep remembering that. Ahh.. the life of a foster mom.

I doubt it gets easier the next time and I pray there is no next time and that no foster parents have to deal with the same thing. I commend and praise or regular teenie tiny caregivers for what they do!

To end on a positive note, the other 5 are very active and looking good. They all gained weight and we even have a chubby little orange guy that pushes his way in to the best spot :) They are nursing on mom as I type.

We finally have kittens! After a long night and some help from the vet college 6 beautiful baby kittens and their wonderful mom are healthy and happy.

Yesterday at approximately 3pm I noticed Orianna had started the first stage of labor. She was beginning to pace, pant and a amniotic sac started to appear. This may be graphic and too much information but it looked like a reddish/pinkish bubble or a blister coming from you know where. This is common for the sac to start coming out before the kitten but the kitten usually follows shortly after. Things didn't happen like that in this case. The sac of the first kitten stayed out with no sign of kitten or contractions for 2 hours. I called the vet to see what I could do. I was told that it happens and if it doesn't start to come out after 3-4 hours I would need to bring her in! Through the whole process Orianna was a sweetheart and cuddly, purring, and looking for affection and showing no signs of the distress.

So at approx 9:30pm. I called the vet college to confirm as they were open for emergencies. I took her right in. They took some xrays and a ultrasound to see what was going on. They saw no signs of obstruction or distressed kittens (they heard MANY little heart beats) and all her vitals were stable. So she was just having trouble pushing. They gave her some meds to help induce labor in the poor cat and sent me home and said they would let me know when the first one came out or if there were more invasive steps needed.

FINALLY at 1:30am i got a call saying the first kitten was born! The kitten was happy healthy and Orianna took to her motherly duties immediately! So I could finally sleep in peace knowing she was doing well.

7:30 am this morning I got a call to say that she had finally JUST had her last kitten, number 6, MANY hours later, 4 orange/white tabby and two black/brown/white tabby. They were going to keep her there that morning and make sure they were all out and all healthy.

1:30 pm today I picked up the little family and brought them home. I set them up in their own bedroom and am now on the clock to ensure they all stay happy and healthy :) Here are a few pics. I didnt want to be in there too long so mom could get settled. There will be many more pics to come !

A watched cat never ....

...goes in to labour! I am still anxiously waiting for the little ones to arrive! Orianna or "Momma" as I playfully call her is still not showing any signs that she will be having these kittens any time soon; other than that her belly is a touch fuller and she teeters as she walks!

She is eating well and always anxious for some affection. She gives a little hello meow when I come in the door and she and I spend lots of time with me rubbing her neck and her rolling over with the big belly rolling along with her.

She and my other foster cat Narnia have developed a friendship too. I think Orianna's relaxed demeanor has encouraged Narnia to be braver and come out for some affection as well.

1st Time Grandma ...

I never thought it would be possible to be called a grandma at the age of 26 but thats what I like to call myself when referring to the baby kittens that are on the way at my place!

I have very willingly agreed to foster a very sweet little girl ... 1.5 year old that I have named Orianna. She is a very small tabby that was brought in just a few days ago and she is VERY

pregnant. I picked her up last night and this little one could pop any moment!

I personally have never been primary caregiver to a pregnant cat before so this is not only an exciting learning experience but also terrifying ordeal. I will admit I am on the verge of paranoia haha. When I am not home to keep an eye on her I am messaging my bf who is there to keep me updated in case she goes into kitty labor and needs me! In the mean time I am studying up on all the potential things that could go wrong and tips on mom and kitten care. There should be a "What to Expect when Your CATS Expecting" book. Maybe there is.

Despite the anxiety, I am sure we will manage just fine :) I am very excited to have this opportunity to take care of a sweet cat and looking forward to caring for the little ones to come. Cross your fingers that everything goes smoothly everyone!

Hi All,

Tuffy, alias Tube Cat, is doing well though possibly somewhat bored. He is mostly in his room as there are several complicated resident cats in the foster home who do not yet relish sharing with a roomy. He would benefit from visitors.

He loves to play with anything on a string and has learned about roller ball. Catnip seems to do nothing for him and the laser pointer, he just doesn't get. What is the ponit of something you cannot whomp to smithereens with your back feet? His original head-on-a-string still has one eye and one ear.

Hickory - Step 3

Hickory is flying through her steps to socialization. Of course, most of the reason she is doing so well is because of her age. The younger the kitten, the easier change can happen and more quickly - USUALLY. I remember a litter of five kittens and what was very interesting was that each one progressed differently. So basic personality is quite obviously a part of that process as each of those five kittens all had the same environment and same training being given them. I found it very intriguing.

Hickory is a brave little girl. That was obvious from day one when she was quite willing to stand up for herself. So she doesn't fear change as much as some may.

In these photos you see her starting to feel comfortable enough to start to play. It's not the all out play quite yet, but it's a step in the right direction.

HI All,

Tuffy has been just fine in his little room at my place. Well, except for some nibbles of spider plant which seem to have made him ill since Saturday. (Irene the fancy cat scarfs it all the time with no ill effect. Go figure.)

Today he managed a small but respectable portion of fancy-feast-knock-off, so cross your fingers that he is over the hump...if not he will have to answer to Dr Orchard very soon. It is amazing how diminished he suddenly looks.

Before this little episode, Liz was over and said "Oh wow, he looks like a real cat" by which she meant, I think, a cat who lives with people in a home on a regular basis. We want to make more movies, but it takes more than one person since if there is only one, then that one has to pet him all the time.

The Adventures of Tuffy Pudge...9

Hi All,

Tuffy is having some sleepovers at my house to give the clinic a break and also to see how he will do here. He has a small study room to himself and so far it has been reasonably possible for the household colony ( 2 boycats 2 girlcats) to pretend that he is not there. He arrived yesterday at supper, having an unfortunate accident in the carrier en route and immediately positioning himself in the litter box upon arrival, but too late.

Everyone seemed to sleep well, with Yuri's usual morning yowls commencing at about 6:00 a.m. but not provoking a response from Tuffy. This afternoon Tuffy has ventured off the little rug on the floor and leapt the two feet or so onto the futon couch.

If anyone is on their way to the shelter or back, we're in City Park and would love to have you say hi to Tuffy: 652-7351. It will not be as interesting for him here as at the clinic with the traffic and unexpected adventures of pooches, kittens, staff and clients on a daily basis.

Here are the more pictures of Tuffy from the last ten days. Ok, not all of them, a selection.

He has yet to master the concept of playing with a toy. In one picture you can see he has been kneading with his feet into thin air. He does that a lot. You can also see that his right eye still does not look the same as his left eye. Rekha is now thinking that the residual problem is just from the scarring from old injuries and that he is not having discomfort from it.

Today he was not very active. You might think it was because of the kitten (#1616) running around raising hell, but in fact, the kitten does not seem to bother him at all. We had to coax him out of his kennel with food and then he went and sat in the kitten's kennel which was his former kennel. Liz thinks he considers himself retired. Rekha wonders if he has got too used to being in a kennel. She also thinks he is likely 10 years old and could be older.

Along with her new name comes a bit of a new attitude. Every single feral kitten is different. The time it takes to go from Phase 1 and down through the other Phases till they get finally to socializing with people depends on a lot of factors:

Environment: Key to socializing is to make the kitten/cat as comfortable as possible. They will take a lot longer to transition from feral to social if they are not feeling safe and secure. So Environment is extremely important and that environment should be small. A bathroom, for example, is often the room of choice because you don't want anywhere that there are places the kitten/cat can hide that you are not able to retrieve them out of when you need to. If they hide and you're not able to at least touch them, then they think that they are "winning" and you aren't able to touch them....not good. You want them to understand that even though you are able to touch them at any time, that they are still safe and are not going to be hurt. That's one of the important keys to socialization.
Touching: The kitten/cat has to understand that when you touch them, you are not hurting them and, in fact, they want to start to enjoy the comfortable massages and soothing sound of your voice. This touch can be initiated with play. However play and touch are sometimes interchangable as to which comes first depending entirely on monitoring the reaction you are getting from the kitten/cat.
Time: Extremely important. You must be able to commitment a lot of time to this kitten/cat, especially in the beginning phases. Wrapping the kitten in a towel, holding, talking, massaging the head should be done regularly and often throughout the day. (That's why you need to be able to have the kitten/cat in a place where you can get to it any time you want.) Doing this only once a day, or less, may still work, but it will take an extremely long period of time...and the more time it takes to socialize this one, means the longer it will take to get them adopted and thus they are holding up a spot for another from on the streets.

I am always happy to help with socializing tips and talking anyone through such situations. Remember, each cat is different, each situation is different. You learn the basic keys to socializing and then the timing, order, and how used depends entirely on the cat. Keep a sharp eye on their reactions, even subtle ones, and you could end up with a very loving kitten/cat.

LINDA JEAN GUBBE

This is Phase 2: Harness and leash. This can be used sometimes, but timing is very important. It can be used sooner on some, later on others, or not needed at all, or not wanted at all (by the cat).

It gives them the "sense" that they can run away if they want to, but you can still keep them from darting under the couch or whatever, because you have the leash that you can slowly follow along to pick them up when needed. KEY: BE SURE THAT THE HARNESS FITS WELL ENOUGH FOR THEM NOT TO ESCAPE. Very important. And, as I mentioned, only use this when you are confident that they don't try to run when you bring your hand close to them to pick them up.

Personalizing stories for each Foster Cat is a big help!

I found a SUN this am (from a few weeks ago) and read our article over coffee. It is really good! Thank you to Liz who got the pictures of Lynx and Eliot basically did the write-ups. It is helpful also that the write-ups get tweaked for the SUN and no doubt often corrected, so if Brenda or someone could email me any write-ups on cats for the SUN I can benefit from them to fix up the petfinder listings - sort of the opposite of a vicious circle!

Tuffy was out for a little and only hissed after they touched noses with one of our new kittens (1616) who was in a kennel below Tuffy. He is not acting particularly adventurous at the moment.

I am way behind in my posts on him, but he is quite calm these days and just needs a foster home. Totally food motivated. I have some videos but don't know how to edit them...yesterday he had a thing about almost going to wash his bum, getting in position and stopping as if he forgot what he was doing. My friend John the vet says cats do that and there is nothing wrong...it happened about 15 times!!! Anyway, you can see the editing problem.

I stopped by Orchard Vet Clinic this morning to see Tuffy in person. What a sweet and wonderful guy he is. He purred quite abit for me; not bad I think for a first time meeting. He at one point almost was trying to play but just wasn't quite sure yet as to whether he should or not. I wish I had space for him as I would take him in a second. I think he would do well with another shy cat such as Bagel. The little tuxedo kitten was a real go getter too..loved playing and purred the whole time...

H____ arrives!

This little tyke is the luckiest little girl ever. Spotted in the middle of traffic at the corner of Circle and Miller, a gallant knight jumped out of his vehicle and scooped her up from under a car. Safely in his car, she quickly hide under the passenger seat and that's where she stayed, spitting like a little snake.

His wife googled SCAT and called, then drove over to my place where I spent 20 minutes trying to get her out from under the small car seat. The whole time she put on her best lioness impression. As you see in the first photos, this is the little "H" girl, yet to be named, and she is all Diva with Attitude! I have some "lion" taming to do.

Phase 1: Mummy kitty. Wrapped in a towel she has to endure me petting her and talking to her and spending time watching tv with me. She settled fairly quickly and even fell asleep. All tuckered out from a very trying and scary day.

Now well on her way to becoming a lovely little girl looking for a home.

After the traumatic move into the front examining room at Orchard last Monday, things were fairly quiet for Tuffy this week.

On Tuesday I had to reach into the carrier to visit him, so if he found the massage substandard it was his own choice.

On Wednesday, Auntie Liz arrived so we unscrewed him; that is to say, took the top off the carrier and he didn't react too badly. We left a towel draped over the bottom so he could hide if really necessary.

Since then the job has been to get him to sit on a lap. He will if you sit on the floor and sort of drag him up. Getting him to sit on a lap on a chair has not been successful in the long term. He seems to be releasing his inner rug potato. He sits on the blanket on the floor and endlessly watches to make sure any food that appears does not escape alive. He may be moved back to the kennel soon, but will find it has a new hole in its ceiling giving access to another kennel above. It is not clear that Tuffy is the sort of cat who will climb through the hole, however.

Charlie Sheriden is also in residence at Orchard now, but he did not come out of his carrier in his kennel and it seemed too soon to force the issue.

Unfortunately a different issue was inadvertently forced when I left the door open to dry Tuffy's floor without shutting Wayback, the cat who owns the clinic, into the back. Tuffy and Wayback now have to be checked for abcesses. On the up side, Tuffy discovered that he is capable of jumping onto the counter and that the sink makes a usable nest.

"Adopt or Foster this Towel".....Who am I and why am I here?

Today Candace at the clinic suggested we put Tuffy in one of the examining rooms overnight to stretch his legs. It was not graceful getting him into the carrier, but not a disaster. Once moved down the hall, he of course stayed in the carrier, but soon Auntie Liz, that mover and shaker, turned up. And we did decide to shake. Him out. (In more ways than one.) However, after covering him up with a towel, we gave him his regular full body massage and all was well. Purrs were understandably not available this afternoon.

Liz and I had a big visit with Tuffy this morning. We bravely opened the door to his cage and when he finally ventured out, he of course went under the bank of kennels and poor Liz had to push him with a board to get him out. He is quite heavy and it was not easy.

However, many hisses and growls but only a few minutes later, he was purring again for her. He also rolled over to get a tummy rub.

And he may have to have an adjustment to his eyelid tuck. What do you expect from a middle-aged dude whose been living in with a bunch of machines bigger than most of us put together?...

Tuffy Pudge the cat from the feral site is still boarding at Orchard (Vet Clinic). He has his eyelid "tuck" surgery on Wednesday and so far it looks good, but he does look a little peculiar.

He has been a very passive cat, but a little less so now. He growls and hisses when you invade his kennel. However, he does seem to appreciate sustained pettings and massages of his massive head and neck and as of yesterday - ta da - drum roll - he purrs. Just sometimes and it sounds kind of out of practice.

He would likely come around fairly quickly with some standard TLC in a home with a separate room and no hiding places where he can't be reached. Wayback who lives at the clinic does not like him, though he may be getting a bit used to him now. Tuffy is starting to hiss back but again, that may be a good sign that he feels able to communicate his views.

Will try to send pictures soon, but he will still look a little rough, with a shaved patch under one eye.

Meet the "S" Babies and their Mom

These little cuties are about 3 weeks weeks old and are living at Laurel's with their Mom Shelagh.

There is Sarcaren(male) who is black with a tiny patch of white on his tummy.

Next is Starsky(male) who is Dark Tabby and last but not leat Sharli(female) who is a grey tabby with a touch of white on her tummy. The Mom Shelagh loves to talk and tell you all that's going on with her and her babies. She is a good mom and loves to be petted. She is quite tiny and looks like she may be a first time Mom. I am sure these cuties will find their forever home as soon as they are available to be adopted.

Little George has many fans, like Aurora here. Photo was taken by her Dad, Tony, one of the fabulous volunteers who help out at PetSmart when the SCAT cats are there. Tony and his children absolutely adore George, however, where they live now no cats are allowed. So they come to Petsmart to get their cat fix.

This is what Tony says: "My daughter and I first met George when attending CATS, the Musical. SCAT was featuring George in the lobby, and he was so beautiful with his little pair of angel wings, we were instantly impressed by how calmly he was taking all the attention that he was being swarmed with. I have since been able to visit with George at Petsmart a few times, and make it a point to bring my children when he is there. We all love his curious nature, his gentle disposition, and his playfulness. If we were allowed any more cats in our apartment, we would bring George into our family in a heartbeat. What's not to love about George?"

The Life of Tai

It all began with a phone call in early September 2009. A phone call from a concerned citizen who had just picked up a small stray kitten he found lying on the side of the highway. She was small, limp and somewhat unresponsive. It appeared most likely a car had hit her. A decision was made quickly that she would be taken into the Street Cat Rescue Program and she was brought immediately to the vet clinic.

Initial x-rays showed that her left pelvis and right leg were fractured. The next day she received the first of three major surgeries to repair her broken limbs. A pin was placed in her right femur to hold the broken pieces of bone together. Recovery after surgery was long for Tai, and included being confined for 6 weeks to allow the bones to heal without running or jumping. It was shortly after this first surgery that Tai became my first foster cat. She was fearless, affectionate, and generally unaffected by her less than ideal situation in life. After a second surgery to remove the pin in her leg Tai continued to improve, and about a month later she received a clean bill of health.

It was during Christmas holidays when Tai was playing near a staircase and fell nearly 8 feet. I knew something was very wrong as I rounded the corner of the staircase to find her lying sideways and as she tried to get up her right leg hung lifelessly as she tucked it up and walked on three legs. Through tears and sobs I called Bonnie Paul (SCAT’s President) as I rushed Tai to see Dr. Teresa Chu who had been treating her throughout her recovery process. As I walked through the clinic doors I was greeted with a box of Kleenex and many kind and reassuring words. What the x-ray soon showed was a nasty break that would require another major surgery. On Christmas Eve Dr. Chu and her team preformed a surgery to remove femoral head allowing scar tissue to form a new joint. This offered the best prognosis for pain free movement and full range of motion in the leg and hip.

Another six weeks of confinement followed. I felt endlessly sorry for this little kitten stuck in a room with nowhere to run and jump but I knew it was in her best interest so I stuck faithfully to my instructions. Tai never ceased to amaze me with her enthusiasm and her love of food, people and toys (in that order). I spent many days and nights snuggled up with her on the floor in a pile of blankets as she nuzzled my neck and purred.

I felt incredibly guilty over what had happened to Tai, but deep down I know it was a horrible accident that I could not have foreseen. Many cats that have lived in the house and none had ever fallen down the staircase before Tai. A barricade was soon constructed to block off the staircase to prevent any more broken bones and heartache. The house is now entirely “Tai proof.”

Once her confinement was over it became clear that she had developed some behavioral issues, which is not altogether surprising considering all she had been through during her short life. At some point she had decided that chewing was how she wanted to spend the majority of her day. This included chewing on items such as myself, my coffee table, computer cables, doors, couches…I digress…the list goes on for some time. After consulting Bonnie about Tai’s newfound destructive behavior she suggested I take Tai to see Dr. Rekha Orchard who provides chiropractic and homeopathic care in addition to traditional veterinary medicine. Dr. Orchard’s first instinct was that her behaviors stemmed from pain. Her first chiropractic session was fascinating and she slept more peacefully that afternoon than ever before. That day she routinely stretched herself out as far as she could as if to say, “look how long I am.” It is ridiculously adorable and she still does this regularly. After many chiropractic sessions and implementing many behavioral tips provided by Dr. Orchard, Tai has become a very affectionate, quirky, playful and all around lovely cat. Old habits die hard and she still chews on her favorite cardboard box or my computer cable every once in a while, but I am no longer woken up at 4:00 am every morning to the sounds of a destructive and frustrated kitten.

Tai is 10 months old now and has become a permanent member of my family. She makes me laugh each day with her summersaults and dramatic stretches. Her enthusiasm for life is infectious and her presence in my life has made me a more joyful person.

I would like to thank Dr. Brian Gibbs and the staff of Central Animal Hospital, Dr. Teresa Chu and the staff of All About Cats and Dogs Veterinary Hospital, and Dr. Rekha Orchard and the staff of Orchard Veterinary Care for all their care and support during her many surgeries and many recoveries.

I would also like to thank SCAT Street Cat Rescue, and all those who donate generously to Street Cat Rescue. It is because of you Tai is alive and well today.

Introducing Riki and Rebel....

Riki and Rebel have graced me with their presence for the past four or five months now. Boy does time ever fly!! When they first came into my home, they were very, very shy and timid. They would not come to eat with me in the room nor would they play. This lasted about a month or so. Rebel was the first one to actually trust me and eat in my presence. Now, when I grab the bag of food, they are all over me, rubbing against my legs, making their presence known! They will even play with me now and love to get scratchies! I have had to work on picking them up as well as they both did not particularly like it. They get along wonderfully with my cat Gizmo.

They have graduated from living in a spare room to having the run of the upstairs during the day. Gizmo, Riki and Rebel play all day long with the various toys that litter the living room. They even have discovered dirt in my plant pots. Needless to say, the one plant got moved out of kitty paw range!! During the evening, they go back to their spare room to sleep and rest up. This gives Gizmo a much needed break as well. Soon they will be out for the full 24 hours!

Each morning, when I sit on the couch for a few minutes, Riki and Rebel make their way over. They love to get scratched! Riki will actually crawl all over my lap to get into just the right position! He will even roll onto his back for a little chest scratching.

Riki and Rebel have to share me with my two dogs Pepper and Taz. Taz loves to play with Gizmo and has now learnt that not all cats like to be chased! Rebel has taught Taz well although Taz still tries to play!!

Shy Sweet Hawley

MY FOSTER: Hawley is a gorgeous girl. Though she is very very shy, she does come out to get treats and have managed to get her to sniff my hand. It will take a lot more work to bring her around, but if someone is patient and just loves watching her, and she is beautiful to watch, then I'm sure she would settle into any new home. She loves to play and plays mostly by herself, but she does like the other two male cats in the house. Unfortunately they don't bother with her very often and the two other girls have in the house bug her. Tawn hates her and will go after her upon occasion - fortunately not too often anymore. Joy just likes to play but she plays rough and Hawley's not into rough-housing. Hawley is a gentle sweet soul. She likes sitting and watching the birds outside and will sit in my front screened porch for hours. This one photo is where she often sleeps which is on top of my wardrobe in the bedroom - which actually is a big step for her as Tawn used to not let her into the bedroom at all. So it's nice that she has some high spots to get away from the others when she needs to.

Hi,

Great night! Vanilla Bean came out her cage for about five minutes, and was very happy to get loved inside her cage.

The kittens played very vigorously outside, and Jenny was quite content to think she ruled the room.

Truffles left hairballs on her blanket, and the kittens left something much worse on theirs, so I brought both home to wash them. I will drop them back off tomorrow night. I had three furry noses at home very interested in what I was putting in the wash, they even climbed on the machine after it had started!

Monday Holiday

Being it was the holiday, Petsmart closed at 6:00. I was there from a little before 5 to 6 which seems short to be able to let everybody out for one play each. I think it's Preto in cage three that does not seem happy about being there. The Petsmart manager said he was hissy at someone that might have been interested in him. She kind of questioned whether he should be there. I let him out first to play and I think he is just a little scared.

George seems just so curious about all the other cats when he was out. He was up looking and sniffing at Phoenix. They probably would have been fine out together. Gave some fresh soft food but there seemed to be enough dry food and water.

Any new person who applies to become a new foster home between May 15 and June 15, and who is approved by the Foster Committee will have their name entered for a draw.

The draw will be for one of five ipod shuffles donated by Computer Trends. Computer Trends will also be giving us coupons to hand out giving discounts at their store.

In addition, the first seven (7) people who qualify as a foster home, will receive a gift package at the time that they receive their first foster cat/kitten/family. kijiji Monitor Volunteer Needed

If someone is willing to jump onto kijiji, or any other combination of online communication techniques of today, and keep SCAT's name there on a regular basis, that would be awesome. Please let me know. I think the more we are able to use the many new avenues of communication, the more apt we are in getting good homes for the cats, new volunteers to help take the stress off the present volunteers who are often overwhelmed by so much to do and so little time. As the city grows, so do the number of calls for help and it is really tough saying "no room". The key to "fixing" the problem is more communication with the public. This might be a perfect job for that person you know who wishes they could help but are so tied up with life and school or work or just life. We all love to sit at our computers, okay, some days not so much, but there are times. So add a few minutes to post a new ad or just draw attention to an upcoming event, or even just something, anything to draw attention to the SCAT cats and our work and our needs. Hi All,

Thursday night was very quiet while I was at the Centre. Of course, there could have been mayhem after I left. Never assume anything when dealing with cats. We have a new resident: little Jenny. She is incredibly affectionate and cute. She is a true smoke: black, but all the underfur is bright white. New residents have their own small walk-in cage where they stay by themselves as a safe base while getting used to life with the herd. I did let her out for awhile, and though - or maybe because - she is just a year old, she tried to chase everyone. Sprite and Webster were like: "Are you kidding? What is this thing?"

Perhaps I should back up: BIG news for long time fans of the scatcat herd: Jenny moved in because Edward Eddie got adopted out! It was my first Thursday visit without him. Fortunately, we had lots of warning and could get used to the idea that he was leaving and we think he knew also after meeting his new guardian. He has settled into his new home right away. He has been with us for a long time, maybe because his habit of biting meant no homes with small children and many adults thought they would rather not be bitten either. We even took him to church to be blessed one St. Francis' Day. He was such a good boy at the ceremony, in spite of all the big dogs. Though he still bites (well, let's say "severe nips") upon occasion,
his new guy didn't even hesitate. It was a match. Eddie, we miss you. Send lots of news.

April 27 - Monday A.M.

All was well this morning at PetsMart but...this week's group are not playing in a relaxed manner with each other yet: in fact, Roller, Cami or Lazarus (or all of them?) may occasionally shriek at their roomies while out and about. Ironstar is more at ease, but he is older and bigger also. Roxy and Barney did not come out, but seemed fine.

Does anyone know anyone who would be into refurbishing the teasers, as in somehow reattaching new feathers and things to the ends? There is not much left of their feathers, but the wands are really good. I got us one new one.

Everybody seems to be doing fine. Pogo is very outgoing and affectionate and vocal. Wants to be out with you. The kitties in the big cage were out and playing. Maggie a little hissy, did not seem to want to come out. Gave her a little catnip in her cage and she seemed to enjoy that. Caden came out to play. He likes a little catnip as well. Missing Carbon, I don't think he has arrived yet.

Title, Post, Labels

There are three things to remember:

1. the TITLE

2. the POST,

3. the Labels.

1. TITLE: Try to use something simple and direct so that it can be quickly found, for example: Foster Update from Martin household, or PetSmart Thursday, May 6, 2002.

2. POST: Try not to type in long paragraphs. Breaking up the sentences with white space in between makes for easier reading, plus quicker when trying to find specific items about a specific cat. Use photos as much as possible. Photos are awesome. When typing the cat's name, go back, highlight the name, then go to the top instruction line of the posting box, click on the "TT" and click on Large. This will make the cat's name stand out more from the other words in the paragraph and will make it easy for potential adopters to find information about a specific cat they may be interested in adopting.

3. LABELS: Labels are very important. Enter your name, so that we can find an entry we know you made. Enter each of the cats' names that you mention in your post.

Good communication is crucial to helping maintain the well being of the cats and finding them a forever home as quickly as possible.
